Just in: City Council selects Interim City Manager

Posted on Monday 26 March 2007

This press release just in today:

The Sierra Madre City Council announced it has selected Don Hopper to serve as interim City Manager. Mr. Hopper will step into the role of interim City Manager after John GillisonĂs last day with the City on March 30. Mr. Gillison announced on February 28 that he was resigning from the post of City Manager in order to become Rancho Cucamonga’s Deputy City Manager of Administrative Services.

The Council was unanimous in identifying Mr. Hopper as the right person to lead the organization during the transition to a new City Manager, states Mayor John Buchanan. He is dedicated and extremely capable. He works well with the Council, staff and community and will keep the City on track. In addition, his familiarity with the City from having previously served as the Interim City Manager before John Gillison was hired will serve him well.

Mr. Hopper states, “I am excited about the opportunity to serve the Sierra Madre community and organization again. I feel my past experience in the City of Monrovia, and also the prior Interim position with the City have prepared me well to handle the necessary responsibilities. This is a wonderful town with great character and a passionate and active community.”

Mr. Hopper retired as Monrovia’s City Manager in 2004, and shortly after retirement he came to Sierra Madre and served as Interim City Manager here from late October 2004 until Mr. Gillison was hired in late March 2005. As it was in the past, his responsibilities in this position are to: provide guidance and support to all City departments; manage the processes which support the City Council’s policy-making role; oversee the creation of the City’s budget; lead organizational development activities to foster a high-performing workplace; oversee public communications; and manage interdepartmental teams and community task forces on complex, high profile issues.

The City Council has retained Mathis and Associates to initiate the search process for a new City Manager. It is expected that this process will take four months.
