Step-Back-in-Time Weekend

The following is a press release from Webb-Martin Realtors about the upcoming Centennial Lawn Party on June 23 and June 24:

Sierra Madre, CA - When was the last time you, your friends and family spent a day in the park just enjoying each other’s company, playing games, and relishing some good food and fun?

As the city of Sierra Madre continues to enjoy a full calendar year of Centennial events celebrating the year of incorporation of the foothill village, Webb-Martin Realtors is inviting everyone to a play date in the park for its Centennial Lawn Party, Sat., June 23 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Memorial Park, 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.

“We wanted to do something that would take everyone back in time to see what family and friends would do on a Saturday afternoon when our town was first starting out,” explained Judy Webb-Martin of the 1907-themed party. “We also wanted to give a gift to the town in this year of celebrations.”

This party is open to the public, but there are a few conditions. To truly send everyone back in time, folks are encouraged to dress in all-white costumes from the early 1900s – all the better to play croquet, badminton, horseshoes, and tennis. Just bring your own rackets! And ladies don’t forget your hats and parasols.

If guests want to bring a picnic lunch they will find a great choice of sweets for the afternoon. Kids of all ages will enjoy the Fairy Floss (cotton candy) and slices of good old-fashioned pie will be on sale as part of a special Pie Baking Contest to benefit local community groups.

In true Sierra Madre fashion, the first full weekend of summer will be jam packed with activities for everyone to enjoy. In addition to the Webb-Martin Centennial Lawn Party, the Sierra Madre Historical Society will be hosting a film festival in City Hall featuring Hollywood movies and documentaries all filmed in or telling the story of Sierra Madre.

Highlights include an early D.W. Griffith film shot on location in town, the 1970s documentary “The Search for Billy” about the world-renowned Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, the Bob Hope movie “The Seven Little Foys” featuring the historical Pinney House, and the horror classic “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.” The screenings will run on Sat., June 23 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sun., June 24 from noon to 6 p.m. Tickets will be on sale at the event.

Also on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. the winning films chosen in the first Sierra Madre Film Festival sponsored by Launchzilla.com will be shown on a big screen in Memorial Park. All entries in the contest were intended to be PG or G-rated so this should be another family friendly event.
