This just in: ‘My little protest’

Posted on Wednesday 19 April 2006

An inSierraMadre.com reader placed this sign outside of City Hall this morning as “my little protest” against the unscheduled swearing-in of the newly-elected Council members last night.

The reader submitted this photograph to inSierraMadre.com and wrote in an e-mail: “I did not feel the 3 candidates should have been sworn in last night. [The sign] was placed just before 9am this morning and removed within minutes.”

Speaking for myself, I was surprised also, I was unprepared to make any decisions since I had not read the agenda packet.
Every volunteer in service to the city, particularly the last council should be applauded.

The following are items I would like to pursue:

I am interested in having the ENTIRE C.C. Agenda packet on line, not just what gets handed out to the public prior to the meeting, so everyone gets the background info . (Perhaps insierramadre.com can have it on it’s website).

I am going to ask for a councilman’s office space at the city hall for those on the council who can spare the time to take citizen’s comments and suggestions one on one., to be passed on to the entire council for possible action if warranted . Hours to be scheduled by the councilman’s schedule, and to avoid possible Brown Act violation.
3 councilman together is considered a quorum and would have to be noticed as a public meeting.

I am looking to make myself available 3 hours minimum per week..

If Councilmen Watts, Mosca and Zimmerman were unprepared to take office, they should have declined to be sworn in until the existing council had dealt with issues on the agenda. They easily could have stopped the rude and obnoxious behavior of their supporters at any time by coming to the microphone and asking for the agenda to progress as planned. There is no excuse for the public humiliation and vilification of the former council members each of whom had devoted themselves to our community.

First, I would like to thank Mr. Watts for participating in this forum. But I really must agree with Mr. Hall.

I would also like to be sure that people know that there is going to be a Reception for Mr. Maurer, Mr. Stockley, and Mrs. Torres Tuesday night, the 2nd of May after the Re-Organization at Council Chambers. It will be at 7:30pm at Pritchard Hall at the Congrigational Church, (walking distance from City Hall). I am sure there will be flyers or some other announcements about this so please watch and inform your friends.

I have been hearing whispers around town that Mr. Zimmerman is seeking the Mayoral nomination at the re-orginization. I hope that this is not true. And if I am incorrect, I offer my apologies, and would hope Mr. Zimmerman would contribute to this forum and clarify! I do not see any reason to further divide this town by breaking with tradition and not nominating, and selecting an experienced Council Member for this position.

I want to make it very clear that it was not me who sent out an email to people, advising them to be at the City Council meeting on the 18th for something interesting was going to happen. I knew nothing about what happened until last Sunday, April 23rd.

    Respectfully,
    Carroll Brown
