I have lived on South Hermosa near Memorial Park in Sierra Madre for just over two years and love just about everything about Sierra Madre. More importantly than being a resident of this fine city, I am a father of three young children.
When my wife and I moved here, we were thrilled to find a house so close to the park.
Very soon after moving in, however, we realized that many residents cut through Hermosa to avoid traffic on Orange Grove on their way to Baldwin or further east.
A while ago, my wife and I were asked if we would support speed bumps on Hermosa. We gladly said we would and I even remember commenting to my wife that I hoped that it wouldn’t take a child getting hurt to make our wish a reality.
Little did I know that my six-year-old son Mikie would be the child to get hurt.
On Saturday, April 8th, after a perfect day of playing at the park, we headed home. As my son was crossing Mariposa Avenue just below the park, a car coming too fast struck him. He was knocked unconscious, and for the few minutes that he was motionless, my wife and I were scared beyond belief.
Despite speed limits and even signs of children playing, cars speed through the streets surrounding the park on a daily basis. I feel that the best way to protect the future of Sierra Madre is to invest in the only measure that will force drivers to slow down – speedbumps.
At The City Council meeting on April 18, I requested of our Council that a proposal for the installation of speed bumps on South Hermosa and Mariposa be added to the next meeting’s agenda. I was extremely pleased when the Council Members, including our three newest members - Joe Mosca, Kurt Zimmerman, and Don Watts — added this initiative to be voted on at the next Council meeting.
If you want to help make our city safer for the youth of Sierra Madre, please come to the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 9 at 6:30 PM and voice your support.
I thank all those in advance who come to support my dream of a safer Sierra Madre become a reality.
