Huck Finn Fishing Derby hosts first campout

Posted on Sunday 2 April 2006

The annual Huck Finn Fishing Derby added a new feature this year — an all-night campout by the retaining basins. The next morning, as the kids fished the teeming waters, parents reported to inSierraMadre.com that a good time was had by all — s’mores, a bar-b-q, campfire and games.

Sierra Madre resident Erik Zimmerman was there packing up his camping gear. He said the campout was “a good time” and that he hopes the town will offer the event again. He said the view was great and that you could see the lights off Heasley Field from the high perch of the campsite. Then he and his sons, Erik, 5, and Ryan, 3, woke up and caught 10 fish.

Danielle Kurkdjian, 4, was there with her father, Rafi, who used to come to the Huck Finn Fishing Derby when he was a kid. Danielle cut a fine fishing figure on the banks of one of the basins in her pink chair, protected by a pink umbrella.

Youth Activities Coordinator Alexis Braun said the campout went very well and that there were about 35 tents. They hope to offer the event again.

Sierra Madre resident and Civic Club member Margaret Fullinwider explained that the derby is “everybody’s favorite event. It’s a happy event.”
