Police Chief issues traffic safety announcement

Posted on Wednesday 19 July 2006

Police Chief Marilyn Diaz has sent the following announcement about traffic and pedestrian safety to inSierraMadre.com:

Police Chief Marilyn Diaz is asking motorists to obey traffic laws, especially speeding and crosswalk violations. Sierra Madre police officers will be reminding the public to drive safely by using the radar speed trailer, temporary signage and volunteers to monitor speed in residential areas. Officers will be writing more citations in the business district and in heavily-traveled residential streets in response to complaints. The speed limit in residential areas is 25 m.p.h., unless otherwise posted.

The Police Department is also planning operations to target crosswalk violations along the main thoroughfares. Recently, a motorist drove through a crosswalk on Baldwin Ave., causing injuries to a pedestrian. Many pedestrians, both adults and children, are not looking around to check for oncoming traffic before stepping off the curb, assuming that motorists will stop for them.

One of the ways we keep Sierra Madre safe is by being conscientious in our driving habits and by being responsible pedestrians. You can avoid a ticket, and more importantly, you can save a life.
